About Mixpanel Engineering
Mixpanel Engineering is a small, fast-moving team focused on delivering real value to customers. We build powerful AI-powered product analytics while obsessing over clarity, simplicity, and delight. Product innovation drives our business, and product engineering teams own that responsibility.
The Product Engineering org is responsible for building our core product that delivers insights to customers. These teams are defining the next phase of our AI-led product experiences and are uniquely positioned to build the next generation of AI-first products. We build the tools product managers rely on to understand users, protect revenue, and scale companies. As we move toward IPO, our work evolves from showing what happened to explaining why. This shift unlocks deeper insight, better decisions, and the next generation of analytics.
About the Role
The Director of Engineering, reporting directly to the CTO, will be responsible for all of Product Engineering. You'll own the core analysis experience that product managers and engineers rely on daily, the growth infrastructure that brings new builders into the product and keeps them there, and the platform capabilities that let teams test and ship with confidence. Success is measured by revenue and retention.
What You'll Do
Lead multiple engineering teams across different product areas. This role is for someone who develops people seriously and holds a high bar for execution.
Build an AI first product analytics for the next generation of software
Hire well, coach deeply, and build a culture where engineers feel ownership and pride in what they ship.
Shape direction alongside Product and Design, turning big ideas into focused execution without losing quality.
Set the technical bar. Empower tech leads with clarity and trust, and protect the systems your teams own.
Identify and deliver strategies that create real value for customers and the business.
Drive technical strategy, including evolving foundational capabilities to support the long-term product vision.
Partner with Design, Product, and GTM to bring product capabilities to market.
What We're Looking For
10+ years of engineering experience; 4+ years leading engineering teams of 50+, including experience managing managers.
Proven track record building and shipping customer-facing web applications at scale.
Experience building AI-powered products in production, not as an add-on, but as a core part of the product.
Strong collaboration with product managers and designers on meaningful user-facing work.
Strong judgment in technical tradeoffs, with lessons learned to back it up.
Evidence of leadership through influence, alignment, and growing others.
Skilled at navigating ambiguity, making tradeoffs, and bringing clarity to complex org structures.
High ownership, accountability, and product instinct.
Uses AI to do better work: curious, discerning, and practical about it.
How We Work
Product teams operate as autonomous pods, with engineering, product, and design working side by side on clear goals, and direct access to customer feedback, usage data, and business metrics.
We start with customer problems. We reason from first principles. We aim for simple solutions to complex problems.
Engineering owns execution, quality, and operations. No project managers, QA teams, or separate SREs. Ownership stays with the people building.
We value written thinking, dashboards, and demos over slide decks. We work openly using Slack, GitHub, Mixpanel, Notion, Figma, and Zoom.
Our team is distributed across North America, with strong clusters in San Francisco and New York.
Why Now
AI is flooding software with output. Building is getting cheaper. Features are getting easier. The hard problem is knowing what actually works. We process trillions of events and petabytes of data daily, with over a decade of behavioral data to draw from. The work now is turning that foundation into something that tells you not just what happened, but why, and what to do about it. That's the problem this role works on.
Compensation
The amount listed below is the total target cash compensation (TTCC) and includes base compensation and variable compensation in the form of either a company bonus or commissions.
